The project “Young Learners Discovering the World” (Young Learners Project, YLP) aims at giving pupils the chance to get to know children at their age in other countries. It promotes the intercultural exchange via multi-media on a primary school level. Since this year three schools in Germany, Hungary and Ethiopia have joined the YLP, to initiate the project.
The pupils of the involved three schools regularly elaborate small audio-visual presentations on a common topic. They exchange their materials with the other participating pupils. Thereby they get a unique insight into another world.
The Ethiopian partner school is situated in Addis Ababa. The school takes part in the “one laptop per child” (OLPC)-initiative, which distributes computers to children. The GLEN participants in Ethiopia will work together with the OLPC-team in Addis Ababa.
The internship consists of three phases. In June and July, the GLEN participants are expected to visit one of the project schools in Europe and to exchange with the involved volunteers in Germany and Hungary. They will give a small presentation about their upcoming visit in Ethiopia to the European pupils.
In the second phase, GLEN participants will help to plan the next year of virtual school exchange, which will start at the end of their stay in Ethiopia. Furthermore, a child-friendly cultural data base will be established - an interactive guide that will be used for further Global Education and for documentation purposes. When the school year starts, GLEN participants will accompany the exchange. They will help the schools with problems occurring, and will also directly work with the children. This involves small presentations or workshops in class.
The third phase of the internship is Global Education in Europe. The GLEN participants are expected to share their experience with the European partner schools and to help identifying new schools for expansion of the Young Learners Project.
The internship requires intensive preparation and follow-up of the praxis phase - beyond the normal GLEN seminars. Enthusiasm and willingness to dedicate time to the Young Learners Project are therefore essential. Knowledge of education and multi-media application would be an asset for applicants.
The scheduled time for the internship is September to November 2009.
The training and preparation seminars before the internship will take place in English. The GLEN team will be composed of one German/ Swiss and one Hungarian participant.
