Title: Support a local self-help group in the Kibera neighbourhood
Language: English (Swahili would be an asset)
Soweto West Self Help Group (Sosep Nursery School) is a local association working in the ‘slums’ of Kibera. The Kibera ‘slums’ are the biggest in East Africa and are located 7 km away from Nairobi. The general aim of the Soweto West self-help group is to improve the lives of the people of Kenya and particularly the communities in Kibera. The association runs a jewelry and handicrafts workshop which provides stable work and this way supports the local community. As adult education project, it trains youth how to make jewelry as well as non jewelry items with the objective of offering them a way to earn a living. The workshop also generates the necessary funds to run a nursery school which offers three classes for children of different ages (2-6 years old).
GLEN participants will be teaching the preschool children in the nursery school and cooperate with the two employed teachers. They will also support the association in setting up a sustainable network for marketing by identifying and reaching new markets outside of Kenya for the various products from the jewelry and handicraft workshop.
In addition, GLEN participants might also train the staff in how to manage the association’s internet website and pass on general computer skills, or support the association in expanding its scope of activities (for example sanitation and access of water). During school break there is also the possibility to join environmental projects like tree planting in more rural areas.
Basic teaching skills and prior experience in working with preschool children is required. The association is also looking for someone with good internet skills and ideally specific knowledge in webdesign or how to manage a webshop and its necessary applications. Marketing, networking and promoting skills are also very welcome, as well as knowledge about Fair Trade markets.
The scheduled time for the internship is July to September 2011
Training and preparation seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.
The GLEN team will be composed of one German/Swiss and one Hungarian participant.
