Title: Promoting wildlife protection in Vietnam

Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV) was established in 2000 as Vietnam’s first non-governmental organization focusing on the conservation of nature and the environment. Its mission is to foster a greater understanding in the Vietnamese public about environmental issues of local, national and global significance, ranging from the protection of wildlife and natural ecosystems to climate change. ENV employs creative and innovative strategies to influence attitudes and mobilize Vietnamese citizens to live in balance with nature and to take action to protect Vietnam’s precious environment.

To pursue its general aim, ENV specializes in four major program areas which collectively form the organization’s strategic approach. These programs include combating wildlife crime, raising public awareness, working with key decision-makers to strengthen policy and legislation and improving protected area management through education and training.

GLEN-participants will assist ENV in a number of projects relating to their public awareness and education activities. Specifically, the participants will be involved in evaluating the current awareness raising activities carried out with ENV’s mobile awareness unit (a painted 16-seat van) to offer suggestions for improvements. They will also work with the mobile team to develop a new type of education module suitable for large numbers of volunteers to participate in. Moreover, GLEN-participants might develop a performance or puppet show in support of ENV’s mobile outreach and/or conduct brief surveys amongst ENV target audiences.

ENV expects the participants to have some knowledge or experience in the field of environmental education. Creative approaches and methods which can be adapted to the local context and culture are very welcome. Some understanding of survey methods is helpful but not required.

The scheduled time for the internship is three months between July and October 2011.

Training and preparation seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.

The GLEN team will be composed of one German/Swiss and one Hungarian participant.
